3 Things I Learned as a Junior Web Developer
I would like to take you through my experience as a junior web developer. I have now been at Endertech for 11 exciting months. In this process, I have learned more than I have ever learned before. I’ll discuss 3 crucial tips that have helped me stay on top that may be beneficial for you.
1. Be Open Minded
Being a junior web developer is probably one of the coolest things. It is a point in your career where you can explore. What do you like most, frontend or backend development? Which CMS platform will you tackle next? It’s a chance to continuously learn new frameworks and libraries. Do not be discouraged by the title. Be open minded about learning new things. Never feel like you have learned enough.
2. Learn Every Day
Study, study, study….stay on top of best practices, improve your craft daily and keep learning to deliver results. As a web developer, you will continue to learn every day. Therefore, do not be afraid or discouraged to fail. Michael Jordan once said “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” There is light at the end of the tunnel and while you may not be the greatest basketball player ever, you can continue to learn and improve to become a better version of yourself.
3. Become a part of the company
Know what the company stands for, what are its values and work towards being apart of them. In my case, Endertech’s culture is very open and encourages progress. Therefore, it is encouraged to ask for help; this was very difficult to do. As a junior web developer, you will encounter times where you may not figure something out. What I have learned is that it is okay, the struggle will make you a better web developer.
However what makes you a great web developer is asking for that guidance. When I grew out of this ideal to not be afraid and ask questions, I became better. Here we have some of the smartest and friendliest people. When you are around such individuals, do not be afraid to pick their brains. Learn as much as possible from your co-workers; not only about coding, but about their lives and what has helped them get to where they are today. Everyone has a story and to know your co-workers on a personal level helps for a better work environment.
I have big plans for my future. I strive to be a LEAD senior web developer one day. How will I accomplish this? I will continue to learn as much as I can, take it one step at a time and push myself.
